The parts and work to adapt it would cost more than it would to just buy a gas rc….how bout ebay and get a used one? Or craigslist?

No. You could custom make it, but as mentioned, it would be significantly more expensive to convert it, than to simply buy a base level nitro model.
Wait till January, there should be sales on in the model shops, see if you cant pick up a new nitro for a good price. However, be aware. Nitro models cost money. In parts, in fuel, in patience. You need to be quite into the hobby to have the time for one. For every hours use, they will require about that time again in maintenance.
What you could consider, is a brushless conversion. For instance http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Ezrun-13T-Brushless-motor-ESC-3in1-RC-car-truck_W0QQitemZ370308355365QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_ToysGames_RadioControlled_JN?hash=item5638191525#ht_3833wt_1002
I know thats a british one, but im sure you can find a US counterpart.
Brushless electric motors can rocket RC cars to incredible speeds. As quick as nitro, minimum maintenance. Plug and play. I would suggest doing a little research, and trying to get a cheap brushless kit.
